These checks apply whichever brand or retailer you eventually consider. Confirm the current specification and terms with the seller before ordering.
Check the supplied hose length, the window or door type, and whether the opening can be sealed without creating a security or weather problem.
Glazing, direct sun, ceiling height, insulation, occupants and equipment can make two rooms of the same floor area behave very differently.
Check the stated operating mode and whether the figure is sound pressure or sound power. A lower published number does not mean silent operation.
BTU or kW cooling capacity is not the same as electricity consumed. Use the rated input and your tariff when estimating running cost.
Understand drainage, filter cleaning and storage. Some operating conditions can require manual draining even when a unit is described as self-evaporating.
Portable units are bulky. Check who pays for a non-faulty return, how collection works and which UK organisation handles warranty support.
They can cool a suitably sized room when the exhaust hose is routed outdoors and the opening is sealed well. Performance varies with glazing, insulation, direct sun, room volume and outdoor conditions.
Not as an effective air conditioner. The unit removes heat from the room and needs to reject that heat outdoors. Without the exhaust route, the heat remains in the space.
They can be used in bedrooms, but the compressor and fan remain inside the room. Compare like-for-like published noise figures, sleep modes and the practical window seal before buying.
The upfront purchase is usually lower because there is no fixed installation. That does not make it the lowest-cost answer for regular use, and it may not deliver the same noise, efficiency or multi-room performance.
